The Espresso Martini is one of the most famous coffee-based cocktails, and it has quite an interesting history and is linked to 1980s London. The cocktail was created by legendary bartender Dick Bradsell in 1983, while working at the Soho Brasserie bar in London.
According to an anecdote, a young woman (possibly a model) approached Bradsell and asked for a drink that would “wake me up, then f**k me up” (original: “Wake me up, then f**k me up”). Bradsell, inspired by the coffee from the espresso machine available in the bar, combined coffee with vodka, coffee liqueur and sugar. Thus the Espresso Martini was born, although the cocktail was originally called Vodka Espresso.
The name Espresso Martini came later when the fashion for martini cocktails in cocktail glasses exploded in the 1990s.
